An Unheard Majority
(continued)
forced to
pay attention to the issue of illegal immigration. In many of the 2006 House
and Senate races where Republican candidates took hard stances for border
security and employer sanction enforcement, Democrats met them with the same
message. 2 With both Democrats and Republicans both boasting that
they were against illegal immigration it is clear that politicians are fully
aware that both Democratic and Republican voters are united against illegal
immigration; however, this doesn't mean at all the government officials
actually want to do anything about illegal immigration. House Republicans have
consistently rejected any form of guest worker programs, stating that it would
simply be amnesty for criminals.3 Nothing has seemingly slowed the
influx of illegal immigrants from coming into America. Everything from
increasing the levels of border patrol agents, to deploying the National Guard
to watch the border, to paying for costly high-tech devices like unmanned
aircraft, and physical barriers have done nothing to stop illegal immigrants
from coming into America.4 Ultimately the government spends millions
of dollars to create the illusion that they are working hard to stop illegal
immigrants, rather than simply enforcing employers to not knowingly hire illegal
aliens with fake identities. Issues like this have brought out a lot of anger
by many Americans, who in turn have formed groups like the Minutemen to try to
take the law into their own hands with consideration that the government isn't
doing their job. Americans growingly are bringing their angers against illegal
aliens themselves rather than the source of them wanting to come to America in
the first place. It is employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens who are
first to blame for the excess of illegal aliens in America; however, one would
wonder why the government wouldn’t want to enforce the laws it already has these
laws on the books.
